  4. Get More Info is an extention that provides a very quick and easy way to change the type, creator and/or Finder flags for files directly from the Finder. I found that the drag/drop apps out there that change type/creators were too slow for me and I wanted something faster.

You invoke Get More Info by selecting the desired file(s) in the Finder and then holding down the option key while choosing 'Get Info' from the File menu in the Finder (or press cms-option-i after you select the file(s) ). A modal dialog will open allowing you to change the type, creator and any of the Finder flags for the file(s) selected.

  8. You then have 3 options:

  10. OK        - Saves the changes you made and updates the file.
  11. Cancel  - Leaves the file unmodified.
  12. All             - When multiple files are selected , 'All' will apply the changes you made to the
  13.               current file, to all the remaining selected files. If only one file was selected
  14.               it does the same as OK.

  21. -Get More Info now centers its dialog over the frontmost window.
  22. -Current Get More Info version is displayed in the window.
  23. -Correctly handles the case with type/creators with less than 3 chars.
  24. -If you select multiple files and use the 'All' button, ONLY modified type/creator fields will be used to change the other files. If you only change the type, then only the type will be changed in the other files (and vise-versa for the creator).
  25. -If you hold down the 'option' key when the GMI dialog is open, the 'All' button changes to a 'vers' button. Clicking on the 'vers' button brings up a 'vers' resource editor similar to the one in ResEdit. A separate dialog will appear for every 'vers' resource in the file. 'Cancel' will not modify the current resource. If no 'vers' resources are found, GMI will just beep.
  26. -If you invoke GMI when there are no files selected, a Standard File dialog will open allowing to choose a file to edit. This gives you a way to select 'invisible' files (but not folders… oh well).
  27. -Better compatibility with some other menu patching inits.
  28. -Type/Creator edit fields allow only 4 chars to be typed in. You can still paste in more than 4 chars, but why would you want to?

Get More Info uses undocumented information from the Finder to perform the MAGIC it does. Because of this, any changes to the Finder may cause GMI to break, crash, explode or who knows what (like System 7.1 just did). I don't make any guarantees on the operation of this program. I do plan on keeping it working because I use it all the time myself!

  34. I didn't get a chance to test this version (v1.5) on 'classic' Macs or under System 6 as much as I would have liked. Although the changes I made were not specific to those parts of the code, there still may be hidden problems on 'those' Macs. Please let me know if you have any problems.

  39. -Conflicts with other inits that make option+'Get Info' do something else.
  40. -Inability to 'Get More Info' on files that appear on the desktop, but are actually on the desktop of a volume other than the Startup volume.
  41. -Inability to 'Get More Info' on disks.
  42. -System 6 users must have about 45K free System heap for GMI to work correctly. The dialog has many items and needs a chunk to appear on the screen. If not enough memory is available GMI won't work.

  46. Get More Info is shareware. That means that after you try it out, if you continue to use it you $MUST$ pay for it.
